Sporting Club de Portugal coach Ruben Amorim has been asked about taking the Liverpool job, after Xabi Alonso ruled himself out of the running to replace Jurgen Klopp.
O Jogo cover comments from the Sporting boss today after he was asked directly about Liverpool following Alonso’s revelation on Friday.
The Spanish boss had been the favourite for the job but has ruled himself out of leaving Bayer Leverkusen, preferring to stay with them and see where the exciting, developing project goes.
That means attention has now turned to the alternative options for Liverpool, who need to find a replacement for Klopp when he departs at the end of the season.
Amorim has been quickly put at the top of the list of options, with several reports indicating the Reds data driven approach has identified him as an ideal man for the role given the work he’s done at Sporting since arriving in March 2020.
Since then, he’s won one league title, two Taça da Liga titles and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, as well as consistently developing young talent for the Portuguese side.
It’s this which makes him a leading candidate, as well as a 70%-win percentage and just 31 games lost in 207 games managing the club.
Whether he ends up at Anfield remains to be seen and when asked directly about Liverpool, he was coy to say the least.
“I’m focused on Sporting, I’m very proud to be Sporting’s coach,” he said.
“We are focused on winning titles. In the end you’ll see soon. I have a contract and I’m very happy here. The focus is on beating Benfica, for the cup.”
