Wolverhampton Wanderers have been ‘negotiating for days’ to sign Matheus Cunha from Atlético Madrid and confidence is growing a deal can be done.

That’s according to AS, who say the deal is ‘on a slow burner’ but the Brazilian is looking likely to end up in the Premier League.

They explain that while João Félix is the big hot potato of the winter market at the Wanda Metropolitano, it is Cunha who must be the one to kick-start the exit operation at the club.

The Spanish side need to raise money from sales in January to cover a hole in their finances, which was already there from the summer and has grown following Atlético’s failure to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

Cunha and Felix are two of the players that they want to sell and have been linked with moves to the Premier League.

Wolves are keen on Cunha, with new coach Julen Lopetegui recently confirming to El Larguero that he wants him and teammate Felipe if possible.

The defender’s departure is in the air but ‘Cunha will be leaving’ and was even left out of the clash with Ponferradina yesterday as a precaution.

He wants to leave the club after being relegated to fifth choice in Diego Simeone’s plans and missing out on the World Cup as a result.

A deal with Wolves is being worked on, with negotiations on going for the past few days and seemingly progressing well.
