Over the past week or so, the situation surrounding Memphis Depay has changed somewhat, with Barcelona no longer agreeing to let the forward go on a free.

The Dutchman, who hasn’t exactly convinced Xavi he should be starting regularly, has found himself at the centre of interest from the Premier League, where Tottenham are said to have been hovering.

Spurs have been named as suitors for quite some time now, and while Barcelona seemed keen to facilitate an exit at some point, they have changed their mind.

Sport cover the story on Thursday, starting off by making it clear that Depay’s future ‘will being to be known next week’, as the La Liga side want to ‘clarify the situation’ as soon as possible, at which point Xavi will speak to him.

The player himself was holding off talking about his future until after the World Cup, which he didn’t impact as he will, as the Netherlands were knocked out by Argentina on penalties in the quarter-finals, and ‘will announce his decision’ once he returns to training next week.

Still, he has ‘offers on the table’, and it’s revealed that Manchester United, AS Roma and Tottenham, alongside Juventus, ‘are interested in him’, even if there has been ‘little movement’ around him of late.

For Spurs, this could be an opportunity to get a player for relatively cheap, but it all depends on how much Barcelona end up wanting for a player whose contract expires in the summer.

We’ll also have to see if Tottenham step forward, as they might have other areas of the squad they want to strengthen first, such as their right-back position or the centre of midfield.
