Real Madrid have been encouraged to sign Arsenal’s William Saliba in the winter market.
Former Real Madrid and Athletic defender Rafael Alkorta has been speaking to AS ahead of today’s clash between the two clubs.
During the course of the interview, Alkorta expressed his admiration for the Arsenal star.
On October 19th, Le10 Sport stated the Champions League winners have identified Saliba as a priority target for next summer.
Last month, the same outlet stated Arsenal want to offer him an improved deal to fend off Real Madrid. It was also said the France international would find it difficult to dismiss Los Blancos.
Carlo Ancelotti won’t be able to rely upon David Alaba, Éder Militão and Daniel Carvajal, with the three defenders sidelined with long-term injuries. Spanish newspaper AS asked Alkorta if he wants to see Real Madrid strengthen their defence in January.
Responding to that, he said: “There’s a weakness at centre-back and full-back because of so many injuries, but you can already say that Asencio has taken away a problem because his performance is very high. Maybe with him and another centre-back from the youth academy plus Rüdiger and Alaba, if he comes back soon, it could work.”
He mentioned the Arsenal played when AS asked which centre-back he’d like Real Madrid to sign.
“I love Saliba from Arsenal. Without financial restrictions I would definitely sign him. He’s a really interesting player. Of the young centre-backs in Europe, I’d say he’s at least in the top three,” Alkorta explained.
Saliba has made 18 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side this season, and it’s very unlikely he’s going anywhere in January.
