Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo’s impending arrival at Celta Vigo will close the door for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Jonny to join the La Liga side.
That’s according to Atlántico, a newspaper local to Celta, who state the club had their eyes on the Wolves player to bolster their defence. However, the focus has now been shifted to Manquillo, who hasn’t yet made an appearance for Newcastle this season.
Celta manager Rafael Benítez knows the right-back well from this time at the Tyneside club. The 29-year-old made 44 appearances under the Spaniard, mainly as a left-back, a position that Jonny prefers to operate.
It’s said Manquillo arrived in the city yesterday, to carry out the transfer formalities. His deal wasn’t announced yesterday due to some minor issues and the transfer ‘will be announced today’. The newspaper adds he’ll sign a deal until 2025.
Manquillo’s current deal at Newcastle lasts until 2024 and Atlántico claim Celta won’t pay a fee.
This was also reported by Marca yesterday, who added he’s terminating his contract with Eddie Howe’s side.
This operation should be completed today and it will also close the door for the Wolves man to return to Celta.
