Formose Mendy says he took the right step by joining Watford in the summer, but his future is unclear.
The centre-back has given an interview to Top Mercato, in which he talked about his arrival at Watford, his future and other topics.
On summer deadline day, Watford signed the 24-year-old from FC Lorient on a loan deal with an option to buy.
Last season, Mendy played 22 matches for Lorient, who secured promotion to the top division. He played two matches in Ligue 1 this season before the Hornets secured his services.
Top Mercato say his move to the Championship side came as a surprise considering Mendy was expected to be a starter for the Ligue 1 side this season.
When asked how his move to Vicarage Road materialised, the Senegal international explained and said he’s pleased with the decision.
“Yes, that’s true, I played two Ligue 1 matches before leaving. I spoke with my agent, and he told me there were ongoing discussions. Then things progressed, and he told me I was going to Watford. It happened that way because it was the right move for me,” he said.
Javi Gracia returned to the English club earlier this month and left Mendy on the bench in the defeat to Sheffield United. The manager then excluded the defender from the squad for the next two matches.
Top Mercato asked the player about his future considering he’s on loan at Watford. Mendy sounds unsure of where he’ll play beyond this season.
“There’s an option to buy in the loan agreement. For now, I’m focused on being here. After that, it’s all about football. I’m focused here, on football, training, and matches. That’s it,” Mendy explained.
