Ipswich Town‘s Marcelino Núñez won’t continue with Chile for the remainder of this international break after the national team confirmed his withdrawal from the squad.
The 26-year-old left Chile for Europe when Norwich City signed him from Universidad Católica in 2022.
He spent three years with the Championship side and left them to join their direct rival, Ipswich Town. It goes without saying this move didn’t please the Canaries supporters.
The midfielder made his senior debut for Chile in 2021. He had lost his place in the side in his final season at Norwich City and regained it after joining Ipswich Town.
Interim Chile manager Nicolás Córdova left him out of the squad in March before recalling him in September.
Ipswich Town player left NT squad
Last weekend, Nicolás Córdova started him in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Canada. Earlier this week, Marcelino Núñez was an unused substitute in La Roja’s another defeat, this time to the USA.
However, the Ipswich Town man will no longer represent them for the remainder of this international break. Both the Chilean football association and the national team have released the same statement on their official websites.
‘Player Released from the Chilean National Team – Wednesday, September 30. The national team Management reports that player Marcelino Núñez (Ipswich Town) has been released from the squad for personal reasons,’ a statement read.
The national team and AS in Chile haven’t provided further clarification about his release. The latter do state it’s an ‘unexpected loss’ for Chile.

No major concern for Gary O’Neil
Marcelino Núñez withdrew from the squad for personal reasons and not because of any fitness or injury problem.
Therefore, Gary O’Neil doesn’t have to worry much about his availability when Ipswich Town will face Fulham on October 10th.
In his debut season, the Chile international managed three goals and nine assists. He had played a part in helping the Tractor Boys return to the Premier League.
Last week, Núñez talked about fulfilling his Premier League dream and dropped a hint of Ipswich Town’s activities in January.
