Malaga youngster Antoñito Cordero has been labelled ‘the snake’ for his move to Newcastle United, with implications he’s only made the move for the money.
COPE, Diario Sur, En Cancha and Onda Cero all have their own takes on the transfer today, which has caused plenty of anger at Malaga and in Spain.
Reports yesterday stated that Cordero has signed for Newcastle on a five-year deal, rejecting the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid to move to St James Park on a free transfer.
Malaga are deeply disappointed by how things have turned out, with them set to receive nothing for a player they developed themselves and was a hero of their promotion campaign last season.
That’s caused plenty of anger and disappointment and Cordero is not out of the firing line by any means.
COPE kick things off by labelling him ‘the snake’ for the way he’s leaving the club, particularly because Malaga’s leadership believed they could get him to sign a new deal.
Instead Cordero has left at ‘zero cost’, leaving nothing at the Spanish club but charging a signing on bonus to Newcastle and signing a ‘major contract’ with Adidas too. In other words, he’s benefitted and Malaga get nothing.
Diario Sur say similar, also labelling Cordero a ‘snake’ and explaining that Newcastle won him over with a ‘spectacular’ offer that convinced him, his family and his entourage. As far as they’re concerned, it was all about the money.
Marca also suggested yesterday that the youngster had been handed a ‘significant financial leap’ with the deal he’s signed at Newcastle.
En Cancha go straight to the point, saying the ‘petrodollars do it again’ for Newcastle and lamenting the ‘current phenomenon’ of a billionaire sheikh arriving from the Middle East, buying ‘any team’ and putting an ‘infinite wallet’ at their disposal.
They also clearly feel it is money that has convinced him to choose Newcastle over Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Onda Cero are less focused on Cordero, and instead state that the move is another sign of the ‘mismanagement’ taking place at Granada. They have been accused of over optimism and sitting on their hands elsewhere after Cordero’s move was revealed on Tuesday.
They, though, are one lone voice in a growing crowd who are very unhappy with Cordero, who is now officially a snake whose sold out his club for money in the North East as far as they’re concerned.
