Sunderland‘s Omar Alderete is likely to miss the upcoming international break with Paraguay because of an injury.

The centre-back suffered a setback in Sunderland’s 1-0 Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday.

Omar Alderete suffered an injury in Sunderland’s Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar

Last season, the Paraguay international was a regular for the Premier League side, playing 34 matches. That isn’t the case this season as he played only 23 minutes in the league.

Earlier this week, Sunderland returned to Europe for the first time in over five decades. Régis Le Bris started Omar Alderete against AZ Alkmaar, and the plan was for him to play the full 90 minutes.

That didn’t happen because the 29-year-old suffered a setback and left the pitch in the 52nd minute.

The defender is suffering from a muscle injury and is likely to miss Paraguay’s friendlies in September-October. This means he’ll miss the Black Cats’ league clash against Manchester City on Sunday.

Agent’s chat with Sunderland man after injury

Omar Alderete’s agent Renato Bittar has been speaking to Paraguay’s Rock and Pop 95.5 FM. Bruno Pont, took to X, to share the agent update.

On Thursday, Sport Witness covered a report from Paraguay explaining that the player’s setback isn’t serious.

“I spoke with him after the match, thank God it wasn’t anything serious (Omar Alderete’s substitution),” he said.

He can be available for selection again when the Black Cats host Brighton & Hove Albion on October 10th.

Alderete’s situation not concerning for Sunderland

Régis Le Bris has preferred Dan Ballard and summer signing Kevin Danso as his two main centre-backs this season.

Sunderland, who are 14th in the table after four matches, have conceded five goals so far.

Omar Alderete would have been on the bench if he was available for tomorrow’s clash against Manchester City.

Therefore, the defender’s absence and him potentially missing the upcoming international break shouldn’t be a major concern for Le Bris or his side.
