Marca have a feature today on what’s happening at Deportivo La Coruna following the club’s confirmed relegation to Spain’s second tier.

Several players will be returning to their parent clubs, with Lucas Perez having to go back to Arsenal and others also off to where they came from.

Then there’s those who are ‘liberated by descent’, footballers with clauses which see them leave Depor in the case of relegation. One of those is Carles Gil, who Aston Villa fans probably thought wouldn’t be returning to the Championship club.

If Marca are correct, the clause which meant Depor had to make the loan move permanent this summer has been made invalid by another which was related to relegation.

Aston Villa owner Tony Xia had made the compulsory purchase clause public, and didn’t mention anything about it not happening in the case of relegation.

Marca may be wrong, Xia may have thought Depor would be safe, or the Aston Villa owner may not have been aware of the extra clause.

Carles Gil has played 478 minutes this season, and since a 55 minute stint against Real Sociedad at the beginning of February he’s only added a further 6 minutes.

Should the 25 year old return to Aston Villa, he’ll have a further year left on his contract with the club.
