Rangers’ Óscar Cortés has emerged as a new target for Sporting de Gijón and could leave Russell Martin’s side late in the summer window.

That’s at least what La Voz de Asturias, a newspaper local to the second division Spanish club, are reporting.

Sporting de Gijón are in the market for a winger and have a few options, including the Rangers player.

The Colombia international is capable of playing on both wings and this could please the Segunda División side. According to the report, they have contacted the Scottish club to discuss a potential loan move.

La Voz de Asturias claim Cortés doesn’t hold a Spanish passport, meaning he will occupy a non-EU slot, if Sporting de Gijón were to sign him.

Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to back up Sporting de Gijón’s desire to sign the attacker.

He reports they have registered a ‘formal interest’ with Russell Martin’s side to secure the South American’s services. Rangers are open to listening to offers, to help Cortés ‘regain his competitive fitness’.

Cortés initially moved to Ibrox on loan from RC Lens in January 2024 and his temporary stay was extended until the end of last season. Rangers then exercised the purchase option to make his stay permanent this summer.

He’s struggled with fitness, limiting him to 764 minutes from 21 games for Rangers in the last 18 months. A loan move can help him regain his fitness and enjoy regular minutes.
