Atlético Madrid have been credited with interest in Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero.
Recent claims have stated Diego Simeone has held talks with the centre-back and Spurs have set an €80m asking price.
Thursday’s edition of AS relays that and then provides their own take. Their title says ‘priority Cuti Romero’.
Within the report, it’s explained the La Liga side are looking to improve their defence in the summer window. Simone feels the Spurs player’s addition would substantially improve the centre-back position.
The Argentina international’s contract expires in 2027 and Transfermarkt values him at €50m. Los Rojiblancos are well aware Tottenham are ‘tough negotiators’ and therefore, have to dig deep to secure the defender’s services.
Although earlier claims mentioned an €80m price tag, the newspaper states the Madrid club would try to bring it down to €40-50m. They are clear the 26-year-old is their priority target and have already made it clear to him.
Romero, for his part, is attracted to Atlético’s project and feels he can adapt quickly since there are several Argentines in the squad. He’s also asked his compatriots, Julián Alvarez, Rodrigo De Paul, Nahuel Molina, Giuliano Simeone and Ángel Correa about their club.
The Spanish club are aware it won’t be easy but believe Simeone and his desire to join them could help them in this operation. If Spurs are open to selling Romero, they’ll try to sign him before the FIFA Club World Cup in June.
Romero doesn’t have a Spanish passport, meaning he’ll take a non-EU slot in Atlético’s squad. This shouldn’t be a concern considering Molina and Samuel Lino are currently occupying two out of the three spots.
With the South American and Simeone’s side keen on transfer, developments could be expected in the coming weeks.
