Leeds United’s Maximilian Wöber has been limited to just over 300 minutes from six games in the Championship this season.

The Austria international’s minutes were restricted due to injuries and he wasn’t utilised regularly by Daniel Farke when available for selection.

He suffered a knee injury in September and underwent surgery that kept him away from the pitch for over a month. The Leeds player had to undergo surgery again earlier this month and that is currently keeping him on the sidelines.

Austrian journalist Peter Linden covers the 27-year-old’s injury situation and his future at Elland Road beyond this season.

The centre-back underwent second surgery on the same knee because fluid was getting into his knee. He was operated by a specialist in London and is expected to miss March’s international break.

He joined Leeds from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2023, when they were in the Premier League.

Following their relegation, Wöber joined Borussia Mönchengladbach on loan last season and returned to Leeds last summer because the German club weren’t able to buy him. He then started facing knee problems while his minutes were restricted at Leeds this season.

The defender’s contract is until 2027, but Linden claims ‘something will have to happen’ in the summer if he wants to fulfil his dream of playing at the 2026 World Cup. In other words, the Austrian has to leave Elland Road if he has to feature regularly next season.

According to Linden, Farke wasn’t pleased with Wöber’s decision to go out on loan to the Bundesliga club.

He adds: “One can certainly speak of a tense relationship [between Farke and Wöber] which is unlikely to improve quickly.”

Therefore, the player could look for a new club in the next window.
