Marcos Rojo has admitted he was ‘about to leave’ Manchester United for Everton in 2019, only for an argument to end the possibility of the switch.

The defender has been speaking to Libero in his homeland, relayed by MSN, about his career so far and specifically his time in England with Manchester United.

The Argentine defender spent six years with Manchester United following a €25m move from Sporting Club de Portugal in August 2014 and made 122 appearances in that time before leaving for Estudiantes on loan in January 2020.

He had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford since the previous summer, when several Premier League clubs were thought to be keen on him.

Everton were one of them, with reports in England making it clear that talks were underway over a transfer to Merseyside.

That never happened and he ended up staying with Manchester United until the following January, when he left on loan before returning in the summer and eventually leaving on a permanent basis in February 2021.

It seems things could have been very different, though, as he had been on the verge of a switch to Goodison Park.

“I was about to leave for Everton, I had said goodbye to my teammates, I grabbed my boots and everything,” he said.

“I waved to everyone because I was leaving, but there was a fight between the owners of Everton and Manchester.

“They were at loggerheads and wouldn’t let me go, the next day I had to go back to training with all the stuff.”
