When Bryan Gill first moved to Valencia on loan from Tottenham in January 2022, he made a very quick and very positive impression.
After around a month his playing style had been likened to that of Lionel Messi and the local media dubbed him ‘Maradona de Barbate’, in reference to where he’s from.
There was talk of a permanent move and Valencia essentially selling anything which wasn’t nailed down in order to fund it. But things gradually dropped away and by April he’d started to slip out of the picture. He didn’t start the Copa del Rey final against Real Betis, which was ultimately lost on penalties.
Sunday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo has a headline reading ‘Bryan Gil, MVP in league debut’, they go on to say he was ‘the most outstanding player in the squad created by Míchel Sánchez’.
They fall over themselves with praise, saying he adapted ‘in a phenomenal way’, and his performance was almost like a ‘lecture’.
Both Girona and Tottenham will hope Gil can keep it up for a lot longer this time, aiding his career and helping Spurs finally get a decent fee.
