AC Milan should never have signed Emerson Royal from Tottenham this summer, as he simply doesn’t fit in at the Italian club.
That’s according to Paolo di Canio, via Calciomercato, who says the Tottenham fan chants against the Brazilian should have been a warning for AC Milan in the summer.
The 25-year-old joined Milan in a €15m deal from Tottenham in the summer, bringing an end to a three-year stay in London after a €25m move from Barcelona in August 2021.
He was never loved at Spurs, with a number of shaky performances far outweighing any positives under a series of different managers.
It’s been a similar story for him in Milan, where he’s managed 16 appearances totalling 1165 minutes so far but not earned any kind of credit with them.
Instead, it’s been months of questions about his ability and the transfer itself, with it explained back in October that the defender was ‘struggling terribly’ and the whole affair was being seen as a complete disaster.
Matters have not improved since that point it seems, with Di Canio sharing his opinion on the former Tottenham man to Sky in Italy.
“Milan should never have taken Emerson Royal, he’s not a Milan player and he doesn’t make you make the leap in quality compared to Calabria. Even at Tottenham the fans chanted against him,” he said.
“And I didn’t understand how he managed to play with all the coaches. Then if he goes to Fiorentina, maybe he’ll make a good impression. If they took him, it’s because Calabria offered even fewer guarantees.”
