Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers could be without Kasper Schmeichel at least for a few weeks.
That’s according to Denmark manager Brian Riemer, and he provided more updates on the Celtic goalkeeper to the Danish media. Ekstra Bladet have relayed his comments.
The 38-year-old started for national team in their two matches against Portugal. The two-legged tie in Lisbon was decided in extra time, which Portugal won.
In the first half of extra time, the Celtic player picked up a shoulder injury but decided to continue as Denmark had used all substitutions. After the tie, Reimer confirmed the former Leicester City star was injured and he underwent tests in Lisbon.
On Monday, Denmark doctor Morten Boesen stated X-ray result has shown there were no serious concerns. He also said the stopper will undergo an MRI scan to find out the extent of the damage.
The national team manager now claims Schmeichel’s setback isn’t serious but isn’t clear whether he’ll be out for few weeks or for a long time.
“Now he is injured, but whether he will be out for a few weeks or longer, we don’t know yet, but he requires attention,” he said.
“The positive thing is that examinations have shown that it isn’t a fracture and something that is career-threatening.”
The former Anderlecht manager stated he held talks with the Celtic man on Tuesday.
On not replacing him against Portugal, Riemer explained: “I never considered replacing Kasper, so we would have to finish with 10 men. We were chasing a goal, and one shot by Kasper Schmeichel is still better than Rasmus Kristensen in goal.
“Kasper could still play with his feet. I have spoken to Kasper. He has told me that it was one of his proudest days, because he was captain of Denmark.”
