Last summer, Newcastle United let Odysseas Vlachodimos join Sevilla on a season-long loan deal.
The goalkeeper joined the La Liga side after making one appearance for Newcastle United last season.
He’s enjoyed regular game time since making his Sevilla debut in September. In fact, it has convinced the La Liga side to extend his stay.
The stopper also intends to continue as confirmed by Sevilla sporting director Antonio Cordón last month. The Andalusian club have to agree fresh terms with Newcastle United in the summer.
Sevilla, who are struggling financially, want another loan deal. The Magpies are understandably demanding more.
As things stand, he will return to St. James’ Park after this season. Sport Witness recently relayed news that Vlachodimos is open to staying at the Tyneside club as long as he’s the No.1 next season.
Greece option for Newcastle United man
Two days ago, AS came up with a report that Sevilla will find it complicated to hold on to Odysseas Vlachodimos because of his high salary. It’ll become almost impossible in case of relegation, and they’re now 18th.
Serious interest comes from the Greece international’s old club, Panathinaikos, where he spent two years between 2016 and 2018. Journalist Nikos Athanasiou spoke about this on Sport FM 94.6.
Panathinaikos need to sign a new goalkeeper in the next window and Vlachodimos has been in contact with their owner, Yiannis Alafouzos. The journalist says that doesn’t mean the deal will go through in the summer.
“Vlachodimos will finish the season at Sevilla and return to Newcastle in the summer. He’s had a good season. After three years, he’s become a starter again at a club, having been caught up in a series of transfers. It makes sense, then, that suitors have emerged,” he said.
“As for Panathinaikos, if Vlachodimos decides to return to Greek football, he’ll end up at the club one way or another.
“He is in open communication with Yiannis Alafouzos. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a done deal, or that he’ll be coming this year. If the conditions are right, Panathinaikos will sit down with Newcastle to discuss and work things out. Of course, these things take time, and Panathinaikos is especially desperate for a goalkeeper.”
Contract, value and agent info
Odysseas Vlachodimos’ contract with the Magpies runs down in 2028 and Transfermarkt value him at €4m. That’s far below his true value.
German agency Fair Sport GmbH are representing the Greek goalkeeper and will have to work on sorting his future in the summer.
