Ever since Sofyan Amrabat started shining at the World Cup, Premier League clubs have taken an interest in the Morocco international.
Clubs normally mentioned are those in the Champions League, with Jürgen Klopp and Antonio Conte the interested managers, but Newcastle have now been thrown in the conversation.
Whether that is because they are interested isn’t exactly stated, but the Magpies were talked about in the same breath as Amrabat by Sky Italia journalist Luca Marchetti, when speaking to TMW Radio.
Relayed by Fiorentina News, he said: “Amrabat showed off after an extraordinary World Cup. Fiorentina declares him non-transferable, but then we have to see when an offer of €40m will arrive.
“Today, it’s easier to accept offers from the Premier League. Newcastle, for example, would have no problem throwing tens of millions of euros at Amrabat. Fiorentina can also decide to keep him, they don’t need to sell because the economic situation is serene. If Amrabat, renews his contract, he can safely stay.”
As stated above, this appears to be just an example of how financially powerful Newcastle are at this stage following the PIF takeover, but perhaps Marchetti knows something we don’t.
At €40m or so, the player would definitely be affordable to the Magpies, although whether they need a new midfielder in January remains to be seen.
Newcastle currently sit third in the Premier League after Manchester City overtook them again following a 3-1 win over Leeds on Wednesday night.
