Earlier on Thursday, we relayed a claim from Germany that Newcastle United were among the favourites to sign Moussa Diaby.
The forward has been a target for the Magpies for quite some time and there were reports that some sort of attempt had been made in January, to no avail.
A new move is expected in the summer, but Newcastle might need to get going a bit earlier than that, if Foot Mercato are to be believed.
That’s because Paris Saint-Germain, also named in the earlier article, have already ‘started discussions’ with the players entourage in order to study the transfer’s feasibility.
This certainly doesn’t mean it’s over for Newcastle, as there’s nothing concrete here other than some early talks, but if Eddie Howe doesn’t want to miss out on the French winger, some urgency should be considered.
There is no indication about the price tag that will be placed on the player ahead of the transfer window, but previous reports have suggested the Bundesliga side could aim to break their sale record.
Diaby has been in fine form for Bayer Leverkusen this season, finding the back of the net 13 times in 37 appearances, as well as picking up nine assists.
