Benfica defender Alvaro Carreras’ agent has insisted any talk of a return to Manchester United and then move to Real Madrid is “pure fantasy”.
A Bola cover comments from Ginés Carvajal, who has completely dismissed the idea after it was suggested this week.
A report in Spain this week stated that Real Madrid were keen to dodge a high release clause for Carreras this summer by getting Manchester United to buy him back for €18m. They then planned to sign him for around €30m, saving themselves money and handing United a tidy profit.
Manchester United retain a buy-back clause on Carreras after selling him to Benfica for €6m last summer.
The move sounded unlikely and more like Spanish optimism than anything else and was dismissed in Portugal today, where they explained it would be a violation of FIFA’s rules on ‘bridging transfers’.
They effectively stop such deals from taking place, with any player having to stay at his buying club for 16 weeks before being sold on to stop the practice.
That was one dose of cold water to the idea and now Carvajal has added another, insisting it’s all fantasy and his client is staying at Benfica.
“I don’t know where this news comes from, everything that is said in it is pure fantasy and, as such, it does not deserve any comment on my part. Carreras is doing very well in Benfica and will continue there,” he said when asked about it by A Bola.
