Manchester United remain keen on Xavi Simons, but his €80m asking price is likely to be a deterrent at this moment in time.

That’s according to journalist Floriant Plettenberg, who reports that Manchester United have never lost sight of the Dutchman.

According to his information, Simons remains on Manchester United’s shortlist as they seek out a striker and a versatile attacking midfielder this summer.

Simons is a long-term target and has been linked numerous times before and Plettenberg insists he remains a target under Ruben Amorim.

The problem is his asking price, with Leipzig demanding €80m for the midfielder this summer as they prepare to sell him after paying to sign him permanently from Paris Saint Germain.

A transfer remains possible, but it would be difficult for Manchester United to match those sums, given the current state of their finances and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s efforts to scale things back, particularly financially.

Plettenberg also adds that the Bundesliga is a focus for Manchester United and they’re looking at the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike. That, though, is hardly surprising given their problems up front this season.

Indeed, this feels like nothing more than poking the coals from the German journalist, keeping the United-Simons link alive a little longer even though it seems unrealistic at €80m unless Manchester United secure major sales first.
