Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso would be in the running for the Manchester City job, if Pep Guardiola decides to step away.
That’s according to SportBILD, who say the Spanish boss would however need majorly convincing to take up the role.
Guardiola is not expected to leave the Etihad any time soon after signing a new contract at Manchester City in November for another two years in charge of the club.
Doubts have been raised about whether he will see those two years out, though, as Manchester City suffer in one of their worst seasons to date.
Many believe a major rebuild is required at the club and Guardiola may not be the man to oversee it after nearly a decade in charge.
Some have predicted that he could instead step aside and if he did, SportBILD say that Alonso is being ‘considered again’ by those in charge at Manchester City.
According to the newspaper the Spaniard is ‘the most sought-after’ coach at the top level and Manchester City, alongside Real Madrid, continue to monitor him.
The problem for both sides is that Alonso does not appear to be interested. The thrives on being able to concentrate exclusively on football, making players better, constantly evolving the team and tinkering with tactics rather than worrying about club politics and glamour.
That’s possible in Leverkusen but not at Real Madrid or Manchester City and that fact could keep him out of both of their grasps.
