Wilfried Gnonto has spent much of the international break facing criticism in Italy over his performances for the national side, with some of that criticism going way over the top.
The Leeds United player was called timid, and there were claims he doesn’t deserve to wear the Italy shirt and shouldn’t be chosen for future squads.
That will have been a lot for the 19-year-old to handle, especially after a difficult summer.
Following Leeds United’s relegation to the Championship there had been suggestions, at least partially backed up by the player’s agent, that Gnonto would be happy to stay with the Whites despite them dropping down a division.
That situation changed as the window went on, and the youngster agitated for a move. He wasn’t able to secure that and was reintegrated into the squad.
So far this season, Gnonto has played three Championship matches, contributing a goal along the way.
Now, after all the criticism, claims are starting again in Italy about a transfer.
The Leeds United player has previously been linked with Napoli, and Napoli Calcio Live report several Italian clubs are hovering for a January deal.
It’s stated Gnonto wants to ‘compete in a major championship’, and Serie A is seen as the obvious January destination. Indeed, it’s presented rather cockily, as if it’s something which is expected to happen.
Despite that, if Gnonto is settled at Leeds in January and things are looking good then he may be hesitant to swap that for Italian football, especially after everything which has happened over the past couple of weeks.
