Aston Villa are one of the clubs in the picture to sign Athletic Club star Nico Williams, according to Sport.

The winger has entered his final year of contract, which includes a €50m clause, and there’s still no clear indication of his long-term future at the La Liga side.

This has encouraged Aston Villa, Barcelona and a few other clubs to pay close attention to his situation at the Basque club.

Sport’s report focuses on the Catalan club’s interest in the 21-year-old as they have identified him as a primary objective for next summer. They even state Barca have held talks with his agent.

Barcelona would face competition from Aston Villa, Liverpool and Newcastle United as the trio are showing ‘particular interest’ in the Spain international.

For now, Unai Emery’s side and the other English clubs haven’t taken the necessary steps to try to acquire his signature. The newspaper states they are only following him with ‘more attention’.

Athletic ‘won’t give their arm to twist so easily’. They are working to extend the player’s deal for a few more years and retain the €50m clause.

Sport’s claim comes a day after AS explained that Aston Villa are refusing to give up in their pursuit to sign Williams.
