Rangers and Sunderland both have a ‘good chance’ of signing Jordan Henderson in the coming weeks, according to senior De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij. During a podcast, the Dutch journalist talked up an exit for the midfielder and named the two possible destinations.

Rangers are largely being seriously linked because of the chance of Steven Gerrard returning to Ibrox as manager. That’s a long way from being certain, though, so perhaps the Rangers link is somewhat exaggerated.

Reasons for Sunderland being linked are obvious, and it’s not just because the midfielder was at Wembley to see them win the play-off final and seal Premier League promotion.

The big question when it comes to the Black Cats, is whether Henderson believes he still has enough to make a serious impact in the Premier League. Similar could be true for Rangers.

Voetbal Zone have picked up a selection of quotes from the podcast, and report Mike Verweij as saying: “He is also being linked to Rangers. Steven Gerrard is said to be the new manager there and he would like to bring Henderson over there.

“But Sunderland is his old club and of course he wasn’t in the stands for nothing. Ajax wants to get rid of his salary, that is one of the conflicts between the Ajax management and Francesco Farioli.

“Farioli really wanted to keep him, Ajax wanted to get rid of his salary. I think now that Farioli is gone, Henderson wants to leave too. He felt a lot of confidence. I think the road to one of those two clubs is open.”

Francesco Farioli made a tearful farewell to Ajax earlier this month after the club failed to win the Eredivisie title.
