Bayern Munich held a meeting with Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel on Monday as the race for his signature heats up.
The 16-year-old ‘super talent’ is on the wish list of several top European clubs at this moment in time as he appears destined to leave Manchester United in the coming months.
The youngster is highly rated at Old Trafford but a severe breakdown in relations between his family, representatives and Manchester United over first-team playing time has led to something of a transfer standoff.
Reports in England over the last month have stated that Gabriel and his team have made demands of Manchester United in recent weeks over first-team minutes. They wanted a guaranteed 20 minutes against Sabah FK, Brighton and Bournemouth before they would negotiate an academy scholarship contract.
The family have since requested that Manchester United cancel his registration with immediate effect. He stopped training at Carrington around mid-September and has not returned since.
The youngster then turned 16 this week, providing a massive turning point in the standoff. Because the youngster has access to securing an EU passport, he can move to Europe thanks to a FIFA Loophole.
Bayern making moves
Now Sky Germany report that Bayern are making moves. They state that the German champions have held talks about the 16-year-old.
They are not the only European superpowers in the mix. Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG are also monitoring the situation.
Sky report that a meeting took place between Bayern officials and the player’s entourage. Further talks were scheduled for Monday.
RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer 04 Leverkusen from the Bundesliga were also in the running, but the trio’s interest has since cooled.
What happens now
There are still plenty of hurdles to a deal. One of those is the financial aspect. Since Gabriel doesn’t hold a professional contract, a move would only essentially require payment of training compensation.
But there are demands regarding salary and signing-on fees to put into the mix as well. There are also legal routes to be worked on.
Sky’s information is that Gabriel plans to apply for a Cypriot passport, despite holding an Irish passport. A European passport would be a pre-requisite for a move to a European club, perhaps as early as the January transfer window. That is the plan being pursued by his camp, otherwise the youngster will have to wait until he is 18.
For now, it seems Bayern are making their efforts, with an exit from Manchester United presented as almost inevitable.
