Ajax made a late attempt to sign Southampton’s Kamaldeen Sulemana.

The Eredivisie side agreed a deal with the 22-year-old and Southampton to sign him on a loan deal, hours before the window in the Netherlands closed on Monday.

According to Algemeen Dagblad, it’s unclear whether Ajax registered the winger with the KNVB [Dutch FA] and FIFA on time.

The report states ‘it may take days’ to find out whether the deal for the Saints man will go through. In other words, Southampton could be in dark until the weekend to find out the outcome of Sulemana’s immediate future.

Two days ago, the Amsterdam club sold Steven Bergwijn to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad. His exit forced them to look for an attacker on deadline day, and they focused their efforts on the Southampton player.

Ajax technical director Alex Kroes has told the club’s official channel they are waiting to hear from FIFA over the Southampton player’s transfer. The director claims there’s lack of clarity on when the paperwork related to the transfer was submitted.

“There has been discussion about whether it was just before or after the deadline. That’s frustrating. You have to wait and see what happens to you. A letter has been sent to FIFA to get Sulemana’s transfer through,” he said, relayed by Algemeen Dagblad.

If Ajax fail to sign the Ghana international, Kroes claims his side will look at free agents.

Sulemana managed 1,006 minutes from 26 games in all competitions last season. Russell Martin hasn’t included him in the squad this season.
