Last month, we covered claims from Spain which stated Newcastle United are in the mix to sign Valencia’s César Tárrega this summer.

On Thursday, the UK press talked about the Magpies having the centre-back in their target list.

El Desmarque relay that and then provide their own take on Newcastle’s chances of securing his services.

They found out that at this moment in time, Newcastle have only shown interest in the 22-year-old, without making any advances. It ‘doesn’t seem likely to prosper’ even if Eddie Howe’s side were to move forward to try and sign him.

It’s claimed the Spaniard’s short-term goal is to continue to be indispensable for Carlos Corberán at Mestalla. His contract expires in 2028, and the La Liga side want to offer him an extension.

A few weeks ago, Valencia CEO Ron Gourlay informed Tárrega’s agent of their desire to offer him a new contract. He’s yet to receive a written proposal, but the report says the renewal is on the right track.

The defender has already expressed his desire to sign an extension with the Spanish club.

“As for the renewal, I’m focused on the goal of helping the team. Of course I want to renew at Valencia. It’s the dream I’ve always had since I was a child, and I hope I can continue to fulfil it. It’s a matter my agents are handling, and I hope we can reach a good understanding,” he said.

Valencia have rejected Bologna’s approach and El Desmarque indicates they are likely to do the same if Newcastle were to contact them.

It’s clear that both Los Ches and Tárrega want the contract renewal, and both parties, for now, aren’t willing to entertain Newcastle or any other club. Therefore, the Magpies won’t be able to sign Tárrega despite their interest.

Superdeporte also report Newcastle are interested in Tárrega, but they haven’t made contact yet.
