Lewis Ferguson has been linked with a move to Rangers and has now expressed his desire to join the club.
The Scotsman has grown in stature significantly at Bologna. He has now played 135 times for the Serie A side, captaining them in the Champions League and the Europa League. A serious knee injury didn’t stop his progress, as he played 41 times in Serie A and the Europa League combined last season.
Some weeks ago, Sport Witness covered comments from Ferguson’s agent about his client’s future. He clarified that the player would prefer a move to England or stay in Italy, ruling out a move to Rangers.
However, the player has himselfopened up on his desire to play for the Ibrox club.
Ferguson has Rangers dream
The Scotland international has an interview in Monday’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport regarding a host of things about his current situation.
When asked about a possible renewal, Ferguson said: “I haven’t thought about a renewal. My focus right now is football; I don’t want to think about contracts or anything else. Then, if there’s something to discuss, we’ll talk.”
Further, the 26-year-old described Rangers as his favourite team.
“It’s my favourite team, and I’ve always said I want to play for Rangers. One day, though I don’t know when yet, it will definitely happen if I get the chance.”
He also spoke about his love for Glasgow but also revealed his attachment to Bologna.
“It’s my second home now. Glasgow, where I grew up, was my first, but here I immediately felt welcomed by everyone. My family is also here; my second daughter was born in Bologna and is called Lorena, an Italian name.
“I liked it, and it’s in honour of Lauren, my sister, who died before I was born.”
Ferguson also spoke about new Bologna manager Domenico Tedesco and offered an insight into his methods.
“Yes, I have positive feelings. I like how Tedesco wants to play and how he sees football.
“We did a bit of everything – build-up play, pressing without the ball, how to create, whether there’s pressure from the opposition or not, low blocking, medium blocking, and much more.”
Why Rangers may have to wait
Lewis Ferguson’s rise to prominence means that he would indeed be more affordable for English or Italian clubs. In 2028, when his contract expires, he’ll be 28 and Bologna still have the option to renew his deal by a more year.
This suggests that a move to Rangers would have to wait. The player could well be waiting for one more big jump to another club. Bologna are the perfect club to allow that, having seen Dan Ndoye, Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori make big moves to England.
Ferguson may also want that, which is something his agent has indicated already. So while Rangers should be alert to his situation, this may not be an immediate things.
