There’s been multiple links connecting Danny Röhl’s Rangers with a move for Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson in recent weeks.

The Scotland international hasn’t always been a regular in Serie A this season. The Rangers target has played 24 times, despite being the club captain across the campaign. Manager Vincenzo Italiano used him as more of a regular in the Europa League, where the midfielder played every single game.

The former Aberdeen man remains a vital squad player for the Rossoblu, who count on him especially during the big games.

Now, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Rangers may not be on Ferguson’s transfer agenda.

Agent talks Ferguson transfer

Lewis Ferguson’s agent Bill McMurdo has spoekn to Tuttomercatoweb about the 26-year-old’s situation at Bologna and his plans, and it doesn’t appear to include Ibrox and Rangers.

The outlet asked McMurdo about the possibility of a renewal at the Italian side. He responded: “Lewis has two years left on his contract. We’ll meet with the club soon to assess whether they’d like to offer him a contract extension or let it expire.”

Speaking about a possible move away from Bologna, the agent discouraged suggestions of a Rangers move. He made it clear that Ferguson wants to play at the highest level and is ready for the Premier League

“Lewis is more than ready to play for one of the so-called big Italian clubs if they show interest in him and Bologna is willing to let him leave. He wants to play at the highest level possible and continue to develop his career.”

McMurdo revealed his client will only play in the top five European leagues.

“He would consider offers from any of the top five footballing countries, with Italy and England being his first choices. Lewis is more than happy to stay at Bologna, but he’s equally ready to take on any new challenge to advance his career.”

“Any move, however, should be beneficial for all parties.”

Rangers transfer always a long shot

Lewis Ferguson is easily capable of playing in the Premier League. His stature has risen to a point where pay more than Rangers and perhaps even offer a bigger platform than Danny Röhl’s side.

The Rossoblu have developed a habit of selling their best players to England. Dan Ndoye ended up at Nottingham Forest last year, a year after Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori also ended up in the Premier League.

It is natural for a Scottish player to constantly be spoken about in his home country. That will keep happening even if the Bologna star ends up in England.

But Ferguson ending up at Rangers anytime soon seems to be a pipe dream fuelled by his uncle Barry Ferguson, who has spoken about the Scotland international in recent weeks.
