At the weekend, Salzburger Nachrichten reported Red Bull Salzburg are keen on signing Leeds United’s Maximilian Wöber in the winter market to improve their defence.
It was also stated the Austrian club are ready to dig deep after refusing to meet Leeds’ demand in the summer window.
The centre-back spent more than three years at Red Bull Salzburg before joining Leeds in January 2023. Saturday’s report also said the 26-year-old would be open to returning to his former club.
A day later, Red Bull Salzburg appointed Rouven Schröder as their new managing director of sport. He spoke to the reports on Monday and his comments are relayed by Salzburger Nachrichten.
The new chief was asked about the possibility of carrying out new signings in January and responding to that, he said: “We should also think maximally in this direction. That’s part of the process.
“Maybe you can trigger something with a player’s departure and change the structure of the team. The same applies to new arrivals.
“The transfer time is definitely a very important factor for me in order to be able to change things.”
The managing director of sport was then specifically asked about signing the Leeds United player in January, and he hasn’t ruled out a move for Wöber.
“I’ve only been here since yesterday and therefore haven’t had any transfer discussions yet. Basically, I don’t think it’s wrong to have experienced players in a young team,” Schröder explained.
Last season, the defender was on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach and returned to Leeds in the summer.
Since then, the Austria international has seen his game time at Elland Road limited, partly due to injury. He’s clocked in 100 minutes from three games for Daniel Farke’s side.
