João Cancelo has refused to reignite his feud with Pep Guardiola, instead insisting the Manchester City manager is a genius.
A Bola cover an interview with the defender today, made to Portuguese station channel 11, in which he discussed his career and relationship with the Manchester City manager.
Cancelo currently plays for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia after joining them from Manchester City in a after joining them from Manchester City in a €25m deal in the summer.
That move brought an end to a five-year spell at the Etihad, which had largely been a successful one under Guardiola’s leadership until 2023.
He managed 21 assists and nine goals in 154 games for the club but a very public falling out with Guardiola put an end to that in 2023.
He was eventually shipped out to Bayern Munich on deadline day of the January transfer window before then being sent on loan to Barcelona in the summer.
Neither side elected to sign the Portuguese international on a permanent basis, though, leading him to Al-Hilal in the summer as it was made clear he didn’t have a future at Manchester City under Guardiola.
It seems Cancelo doesn’t want to open old wounds and is instead full of praise for his former manager.
“Pep made me see football otherwise, for me, he is a genius,” he said when asked about the Catalan boss.
