Newcastle United are ‘closely following’ Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen, according to Sport.
He has played 25 matches since joining the La Liga side for free last summer. Their idea is to bet on the defender’s continuity and there’s even talk of offering him an extension.
The centre-back’s situation at the Camp Nou could change if there’s a tempting proposal. The Blaugrana are clear he will receive offers and the ‘great danger could come’ from Newcastle in the summer.
If an offer of ‘more than €50m’ arrives at Barca for the 26-year-old, they could sacrifice him.
It’s not ruled out that Xavi Hernández’s side may have to carry out an ‘unwanted exit’ in order to improve the financial situation and the Denmark international’s sale could help them in this regard.
The ex-Chelsea man’s departure could be covered with the arrival of Íñigo Martínez, who is set to leave Athletic Club Bilbao as a free agent after this season.
Through his entourage, Christensen has warned Barcelona that he’s happy at the club and has no intention to leave them in the summer. His situation could change if Newcastle make a bid in excess of €50m.
For now, Barcelona believe the ‘great danger’ could come from Eddie Howe’s side, who are following the Dane very closely. Sport take their interest seriously, without dismissing the Magpies as a destination.
It needs to be seen whether the Magpies will make an offer for Christensen.
