At Newcastle United since 2016, Jonjo Shelvey might have been a staple of St James’ Park for many years, but his body appears to have caught up with him of late.
He has only managed five appearances in all competitions this season, with the rest of the time spent nursing various ailments, with the most recent being a calf injury.
There are also question marks as to whether he would have a starting spot in Eddie Howe’s plans at Newcastle going forward following the takeover and the money being spent on the squad.
That’s perhaps why Besiktas in Turkey are trying their luck to sign the 30-year-old, according to Fotomac, who report a ‘proposal is being prepared’ by the Süper Lig for Shelvey.
Furthermore, it’s added that Besiktas are preparing to ‘contact the player’s agency’ about a potential move.
The player’s Newcastle contract expires at the end of the season, meaning any fee to get him would be minimal, and that’s what the outlet states, claiming that a ‘figure between €2.5-3.5m’ would be on offer.
Whether that would be enough to convince the Magpies, or even if a move to Turkey is something Shelvey himself wants, remains to be seen, but it’s one worth keeping an eye on going forward.
