Middlesbrough want to bring Malmö FF’s Otto Rosengren to the Riverside Stadium this summer.
The new Middlesbrough target joined the Swedish club from Mjällby AIF in June 2023.
Prior to this move, Manchester United had looked at the midfielder and Mjällby then confirmed their interest.
He didn’t move to England and now has another opportunity in this window to join Boro.
Middlesbrough face competition
That’s according to Expressen, who claim both the Championship side and 1. FC Köln want to secure the 23-year-old’s services.
Operating mainly in the middle of the pitch, Otto Rosengren has managed nine goals and 14 assists from 107 matches of which 11 are from this year.
The Sweden international played as defensive midfielder in Malmö FF’s 4-0 win over IFK Göteborg on Sunday. He played the full 90 minutes and assisted Andrej Djuric’s opener in the ninth minute.
FC Köln’s officials made a trip to Sweden to watch the player live in action yesterday.
Middlesbrough and FC Köln leading race
Expressen make no mention of any other teams apart from Boro and 1. FC Köln and insists these two are the ‘current favourite’ to sign Otto Rosengren.
While the German club watched him live, Boro have already registered their interest with his representatives. The English club contacted his agent to inform them that the Swede is highly rated at the Riverside Stadium.
Kim Hellberg may know him well from his time at Norrkoping, Värnamo and Hammarby IF.
Expressen aren’t certain how this case will develop in the coming days and weeks. There’s no clarity whether Middlesbrough or the German club will convert their interest into a formal bid.
Contract situation could lead to summer sale
Rosengren has a contract until December 2027, and Transfermarkt value him at €3m. This is the highest value of his playing career.
Middlesbrough and FC Köln’s interest allow Malmö FF to ‘secure a large transfer price’, also because of his contract situation.
The Swede can play in the top flight by joining the Bundesliga side, while Boro missed out on promotion last season.
