Crystal Palace‘s decision not to sign Christantus Uche on a permanent basis this summer has put Spanish side Getafe ‘on the ropes’.

Sport report that Getafe could be forced to sell the 23-year-old this summer to avoid ‘potential financial and sporting sanctions’.

Crystal Palace decision

The newspaper explains that the ‘saga’ between Getafe and Christantus Uche is set to enter its second chapter. And this time, the outcome threatens to become a ‘genuine headache’ for the Spanish side.

Crystal Palace have announced that they will not exercise their purchase option, set at nearly €20m, for the Nigerian forward. He joined them on loan last summer but has barely featured this season.

His return to Getafe is now imminent but will cause problems at the club. They began the season facing enormous financial difficulties in their efforts to reinforce their squad. That was largely due to La Liga’s salary cap.

Every move had to be calculated ‘to the millimetre’ and they were dependent on exits. Various reports have explained that Christantus Uche’s move to Crystal Palace was a part of that. They were heavily reliant on the €20m from that deal to balance the books.

It was ‘key operation’ and Getafe registered the €20m sale with LaLiga, despite it only being an option. That allowed them to raise their squad limit to €51.9m, allowing them to register several new signings.

Now, because the deal isn’t happening, the salary cap has fallen to €34.8m. There’s a shortfall of nearly €17m. That blocked all deals in January and will be a problem this summer as well.

Financial disaster

They now have to either urgently sell Uche or several key players. It’s a situation that will affect more than just sporting strategy.

Not only do they face potential financial penalties, but they could also miss out on Europe. They currently sit seventh and are destined for European competition next season. But in order to compete, they’d need a ‘financial licensing’ from UEFA and the RFEF.

To get those, they need to show ‘economic stability, strict adherence to squad spending limits, and sound financial accounts.’

If the current dispute with la Liga remain unresolved, that won’t be happening. Thus, fear is now sweeping through the Spanish club ahead of the summer.

What was once seen as a perfect financial solution has now turned into a ticking time bomb. Uche’s impending return from Crystal Palace threatens to detonate the entire club.
