Wolverhampton Wanderers made another late bid to sign Boulaye Dia from Salernitana on deadline day but their offer was laughed off by the Italian side.
That’s according to Il Mattino, who say the Serie A side sent a one-word response to Wolves when they submitted an official email regarding a transfer.
The newspaper reports that Salernitana had deemed Dia as a player who ‘must not be touched’ in the summer transfer window, the club considering him as indispensable and a ‘King Midas’. In other words, everything he touches turns to gold.
That does not mean there wasn’t interest in him and his recent performances had aroused interests, particularly from Wolves.
Reports on deadline day indicated they had seen a bid turned down for the striker and Il Mattino pick up on that today.
They say that Wolves sent a ‘certified email’ regarding a deal for Dia, but Salernitana responded with a one worded answer of ‘what?’.
They were incredulous at the offer presented and director of football Morgan de Sanctis has even planned a press conference to talk about the Granata’s ‘amazement, mixed with annoyance’.
Il Mattino state that Wolves had offered €20m for the striker but only in the form of a right to buy attached on the end of an initial loan deal costing €2m.
That was considered something of a joke of an offer by Salernitana, who had paid €12m to sign Dia permanently this summer and were not going to let him leave on loan after that. Thus, Wolves offer was ‘trashed’ and that was the end of it.
It seems their financial issues ultimately cost Gary O’Neill a new striker, with them unable to make the ‘indispensable offer’ Salernitana wanted and instead proposing a deal that was ultimately laughed at.
