On May 24th, Estadio Deportivo stated Real Betis had held a meeting with Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso’s agent in Madrid.
This was backed up elsewhere over the weekend, and Monday’s edition of ABC Sevilla relays it, and then gives their own take on this case.
Last week, Real Betis president Ángel Haro said he likes the Tottenham player, but they haven’t made an offer to sign him.
The 28-year-old spent the 2019/20 season at the La Liga side, before joining Spurs in 2020.
The two parties have been in touch as it’s claimed the contacts between them have been ‘continuous and always remained open’. The Real Betis directors and their sporting leaders have a desire to bring Lo Celso back to the club.
Manuel Pellegrini likes the Argentina international, and his side tried signing him in 2023. Lo Celso’s high salary was a hindrance, and the economic aspect continues to make the transfer difficult in the summer window.
The Andalusian club are now focusing on parting ways with a few players who have high salaries, such as Nabil Fekir, William Carvalho and Willian José.
Real Betis have to lower their wage bill in order to sign the Tottenham man. This would take a while and the report indicates a potential deal could drag on until August.
Lo Celso has a year left on his deal at Spurs, and he’s now focused on the Copa América with Argentina.
