Two days ago, reports coming from England claimed Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has made Atlético Madrid’s José Giménez his No.1 centre-back target for this summer.
It was also stated the Blues hope to sign the Uruguay international for £60m, even though he has a €120m release clause.
These claims have reached AS and they have responded to the report from the British press.
It’s stated the defender is a key player for Diego Simeone and the La Liga side’s intention is to not let the 25-year-old leave, even though Chelsea have showed great interest.
Giménez is expected to partner Stefan Savić in Atlético’s defence for the Champions League clash against RB Leipzig, and the former ‘is only thinking about’ winning the European competition.
Online, AS explain the west London club’s proposal of £60m for Giménez ‘doesn’t seem to satisfy’ Los Rojiblancos. The offer is ‘just a little more than’ half of the player’s €120m release clause.
In the last few years, Atlético have had no intention of negotiating sales of players who are considered important to their sporting project.
This forced interested clubs to pay the buyout clause, and that was the case with Rodri, Antoine Griezmann and Lucas Hernández.
Even if Chelsea are willing to pay the South American’s €120m release clause, a transfer still seems difficult because AS state Giménez is happy with the Madrid based club and isn’t planning to leave Atlético.
This one doesn’t look like it’s happening.
