Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers handed Hyeon-gyu Oh only one league appearance in the second half of last season. The striker was frustrated with a lack of playing time and left Celtic Park for KRC Genk in the summer window.
The former Celtic man’s situation hasn’t improved at Genk as he’s yet to make his first league start.
The 23-year-old has made 14 substitute appearances, scoring three goals and registering an assist in the process. This includes a brace [with a late winner] in his side’s 2-1 win over KV Mechelen in September.
Despite the limited game time at the Jupiler Pro Leageu side, Hyeon-gyu Oh claims he made the right choice to leave Celtic in the last window.
“Definitely. I feel good here, on and off the field. I also feel that the coach believes in me. I respect his choices, he tries to get the most out of our core by using everyone. It’s up to me to seize the opportunities when I get them,” he said.
Genk manager Thorsten Fink has favoured Tolu Arokodare ahead of the ex-Celtic striker to lead his side’s attack. Last weekend, Arokodare was involved in the late equaliser in the derby against Sint-Truidense.
When asked about the derby atmosphere, the South Korea international compared it with his experience of facing Rangers with Celtic.
“I like such charged matches. The atmosphere was there, but it could not yet be compared to the Old Firm in Scotland. Playing with Celtic against Rangers was always a unique experience,” Hyeon-gyu Oh explained.
Despite stating he made the right choice to leave Celtic, the player seems to be missing the experience with Brendan Rodgers’ side.
