In April, Fabian Schär signed a new contract with Newcastle United which takes him to June 2026.
It was a well-deserved reward for the defender, who has been a key player for the Magpies this season. He’s played 40 times across all competitions, a reliable squad member for Eddie Howe and still going strong at 33-years-of-age.
Swiss newspaper Liechtensteiner Vaterland have reported on the centre-back’s future today and the possibility of him returning to Swiss football before the end of his career. Xherdan Shaqiri returning to FC Basel and winning the league has encouraged the idea that more former FCB players come end their careers at the Swiss club.
The options include big names like Yann Sommer, Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo, Manuel Akanji and Fabian Schär.
It’s conceded that Schär feels perfectly at home in Newcastle, but also pointed out he’s said in the past that he’d like to play for FC Basel again one day.
The newspaper insists the move would have to happen ‘by 2027 at the latest’, given the player’s age.
There’s excitement building that Schär and others could be inspired to return by Shaqiri’s success… although there’s not the same level of confidence about convincing Mohamed Salah to also end his career with a return to FC Basel.
