Aston Villa’s relationship with Vitória de Guimarães has taken another visible step forward. Senior representatives from both the Premier League club and V Sports travelled to Portugal as attention turns to potential cooperation between the two sides.

The multi-club project involving Aston Villa and Vitória has faced regulatory hurdles since V Sports first invested in the Portuguese club in 2023. However, the latest meetings suggest the focus is now shifting towards practical collaboration on and off the pitch.

According to both O Jogo and A Bola, a delegation from V Sports and Aston Villa visited Vitória’s academy on Monday. They attended meetings with the club’s new president Rui Rodrigues and sporting director Fernando Meira.

The Portuguese club explained the gathering was designed to “resume and strengthen” the strategic relationship between the organisations.

Their discussions covered sporting strategy, professional football operations, talent development and identifying concrete opportunities for collaboration between the clubs. And that immediately raised the possibility of players moving between the two sides of course.

There is already precedent for player movement between the clubs. Vitória defender Ibrahima Bamba coming close to joining Aston Villa in 2023 before the proposed transfer failed to go through.

O Jogo points out Vitória remain in need of reinforcements this summer and questions whether members of Aston Villa’s squad could now arrive in Guimarães during the current transfer window.

New president delivering on promise

According to A Bola, strengthening ties with V Sports was one of Rui Rodrigues’ promises during his presidential campaign. Monday’s gathering marked an early opportunity to put that commitment into practice.

The level of representation also underlined the importance attached to the discussions. The delegation included a senior V Sports executive, Aston Villa’s president of football and the company’s global director of football development and international academies.

Cooperation expanding

While the prospect of player movement will attract the most attention from Aston Villa supporters, the discussions extended well beyond recruitment.

The clubs also explored cooperation in sporting, commercial and financial matters. Additionally, they discussed knowledge sharing, as Vitória look to strengthen their position within the V Sports network.

According to A Bola, financial planning and sustainability were also on the agenda. Both sides evaluated ways to create greater value within the wider V Sports ecosystem.

Vitória said the aim was to identify mechanisms capable of improving competitiveness and increasing investment capacity. Furthermore, they hoped to strengthen the club’s long-term financial stability.

When V Sports acquired a significant stake in Vitória in 2023, UEFA examined the relationship because both clubs could have participated in the same European competition. Nevertheless, Vitória insisted from the outset there was no issue because V Sports held a minority stake and did not exercise control over the Portuguese club.

The situation nevertheless evolved over the following year. UEFA’s assessment eventually resulted in V Sports reducing its holding in Vitória from 46% to 29%. Governance arrangements were also adjusted, including plans for owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens to step back from joining the club’s board, in order to satisfy UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations.

With those structural issues now largely behind them, the emphasis appears to have moved towards making the partnership work in practice.

Whether that leads to Aston Villa youngsters heading to Portugal remains to be seen, but Monday’s visit makes it clear both clubs are actively exploring ways to strengthen their relationship and create value across the V Sports network.
