Arsenal have made a €400,000 offer for Ajax goalkeeper Tommy Setford as they seemingly plan an overhaul of their goalkeeping department.
That’s according to De Telegraaf, who say Arsenal have made a €400,000 plus bonuses to try and buy the Ajax goalkeeper this summer, a year ahead of his contract with the Dutch giants expiring.
The newspaper explains that Arsenal have made their first move for the 18-year-old, which is yet to be accepted nor rejected by Ajax.
The Dutch club are somewhat ‘stuck’ at this moment in time because they’ve offered him the chance to become the permanent goalkeeper of Jong Ajax and a development path at the club.
But Setford is ‘not unwilling to move to Arsenal’ as it would see him working with the same goalkeeper coach he has in England’s youth set up. A sporting plan has also been drawn up that is ‘tailor-made for the long-term’.
Ajax can keep him until the end of his contract next year and would still receive the money being offered by Arsenal as training compensation but would not receive any bonuses on top of that.
A sale this summer could therefore make more sense and both clubs will continue to negotiate in the coming days, likely for a higher fee.
They will also make a final attempt to convince Setford to sign a new contract and keep him at the club, but at the moment his focus seems to be on a potential move to the Emirates at this moment in time.
