Last week, the UK press spoke of Oxford United’s interest in Cagliari striker Nik Prelec.

Developments have emerged in Italy about the 24-year-old, who is now close to a move to the Championship.

CagliariNews24 report the striker’s sale to Oxford United seems to be a given and the transfer is at an ‘advanced stage’ now.

The outlet are confident that the Slovenian will join Oxford United on an initial loan deal with the obligation to buy, but it will only be triggered if Gary Rowett’s stay in the Championship at the end of the 2025/26 season.

This transfer will come as a major boost for Cagliari’s coffers as it can also offer them future revenue.

Prelec had spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Austria Vienna, where he had scored nine goals and had assisted four times.

The forward joined Cagliari initially on loan in 2022 and then joined them permanently in the summer of 2023. He’s played 16 times for the club so far in his career but has never featured in Serie A. A move to Oxford United could be a good opportunity for Prelec to prove himself.
