The Portuguese press continues publishing lots of stories ahead of the Champions League match between Manchester United and Benfica. And as they find several characters to talk about from both sides, TV channel RTP invited Gil Gomes to be interviewed.

The former Benfica player may not be well known among Manchester United fans, but he certainly has a big influence over the future of one of the club’s biggest talents.

Gil Gomes is the father of Angel Gomes, the wonderkid who made his debut under José Mourinho in the final fixture of the lasts season.

As the former footballer is now focused on taking care of the 17-year-old’s career, he talked a little about him, and even mentioned how coveted he is.

“He is the youngest player in the history of English football of Manchester United. So the qualities are really above average,” Gomes told RTP. “And today he is a player coveted by all the greats of Europe.”

Gil Gomes retired in England, after playing for Hendon Town FC, Salford and Hyde United. That’s why his child was born in London, and has been playing for the English team’s youth levels, including in the U17 World Cup title winning campaign.

Manchester United would prefer not to have any drama over Angel Gomes’ future, especially with repeated efforts to talk up a potential exit.
