Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jeremy Sarmiento was on loan at West Bromwich Albion and Ipswich Town last season.
The Ecuador international will now return to Brighton, where he has a deal lasting until 2027. He’s with the national team at the Copa América, and scored in their 2-1 loss to Venezuela.
Área Deportiva interviewed the Brighton winger’s father Leonel Sarmiento, who talked about a few topics, and his comments are relayed by Olé.
When discussing the 22-year-old’s future, Leonel says his son’s priority is to continue with the Seagulls. If they were to leave him out of their plans, Jeremy would favour a move to Germany or Spain in the summer window.
“Jeremy legally belongs to Brighton, but there are a lot of clubs interested from Spain and Germany. Either we stay in England or we go to Spain or Germany. Brighton are the first option, because they are the owner of Jeremy’s pass,” he said.
“We have options from Germany and Spain. We have to analyse what is the best option for Jeremy, a team that gives him minutes and where he is a star player. The teams that are interested in Jeremy are from the first division,” Leonel explained.
Despite insisting his son is ready to play anywhere in the world, Sarmiento sr. ‘completely ruled out’ a move to the United Arab Emirates.
“The player who goes to the United Arab Emirates lowers his level. Jeremy has to be in a team where there is football and competitiveness, not where money is easily earned but where there is no football,” he added.
To sum it up, Brighton will have to make a decision on the South American’s future this summer.
