Celtic star Benjamin Nygren has admitted he didn’t know what to think when fans stormed the pitch after the win over rivals Rangers.
Fotboll Skanalen have an interview with the 23-year-old today. He discusses various subjects, including the incident against Rangers at Ibrox earlier this month.
Hundreds of Celtic fan invaded the pitch following their teams 4-2 penalty shootout win over Danny Rohl’s side at the beginning of this month.
Dramatic Celtic win leads to chaos
The invasion was sparked by Tomas Cvancara’s winning penalty, which saw Celtic fans spill onto the pitch from the Broomloan Road Stand. Rangers fans soon followed, leading to skirmishes on the pitch.
A member of the Celtic backroom coaching staff was also reportedly attacked during the chaos.
Several police officers, stewards and fans were injured, with Police Scotland deploying mounted police and riot vans to restore order. Oliver Nygren had a first-hand view, and admits it was quite the experience.
“It was a bit chaotic but an experience, you could say. I’m glad we came away with a win,” he said.
“There’s always a lot of emotion in that match. There’s a lot of history between those clubs. What happened afterwards is something you might have divided opinions about.”
“No time to think”
This clash between Celtic and Rangers was the first time since 2018 that Celtic supporters were given a full away allocation of 7,500 tickets at Ibrox.
Police later reported that some fans had entered the stadium without ticket, delaying security operations earlier in the day. The Scottish Police Federation later claimed that commanders failed to react quickly enough to overcrowding.
They weren’t the only ones who didn’t have time to think, with Benjamin Nygren admitting things turned very quickly.
“I didn’t have time to think,” he added about the Rangers aftermath.
“We won, celebrated on the pitch, and suddenly a lot of fans came in and then from both sides. Then it was just a matter of getting into the dressing room.”
For Benjamin Nygren, it was another reminder that Old Firm matches rarely end at the final whistle.
Celtic may have emerged victorious, but the chaotic scenes that followed ensured the result will be remembered for more than the football.
