Lucas Bergvall’s new contract at Tottenham Hotspur may include a release clause for the future, at least if we read behind the lines.
Sport Witness reported earlier today that the midfielder has secured himself a new deal at Spurs, and a 200% rise to go with it.
The Swede now earns £100k per week (€116.5k) after the renewal. This makes his annual salary SEK 68m, which is equivalent to €6.04m. If the earlier reports are to be believed, that means an increase of 200%.
Happy with his new deal
Now he has been speaking about the decision, despite seemingly want to leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window.
“Last year was tough, and that was reflected quite a bit in how things went. But I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club and am incredibly happy to have signed a new deal,” he told Fotboll Skanalen.

“I let time do the talking. I didn’t try to force anything, just tried to be happy. I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club.”
Release clause?
This is where we then need to read between the lines. Bergvall was specifically asked about where there is a buyout clause in his new contract.
“Is that what you want to hear? That’s not something I’m going to say,” he added.
Unperturbed, he was then asked if Tottenham had made him ‘any promises’ in the new deal. In other words, perhaps regarding playing time or a future exit.
“I don’t know if I should go into exactly what’s in the contract, as it’s quite personal, but I’m incredibly happy to have signed a new deal and feel positive about the process,” Bergvall insisted.
Now that, it could be argued, is the youngster almost confirming there is a clause without actually saying there is one. We’ll leave that for the future. For now, he’s signed a new deal, seems happy and is considerably richer to boot.
