Manchester United are now asking about River Plate goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán, and the timing makes plenty of sense after their summer search for another option between the posts.
The 21-year-old has already attracted plenty of attention from Europe. Aston Villa and Manchester City have both been linked in recent weeks, although a new goalkeeper may be less urgent for either club.
Villa have already signed Zion Suzuki as their new first-choice, while City added Gerónimo Rulli as another option. That hasn’t stopped either club being linked with Beltrán.
Manchester United are a little different. They spent part of the summer looking around the goalkeeper market and didn’t get everything they wanted.
They tried for Orlando Gill at San Lorenzo, only for the Paraguayan to end up at Lille. Several other goalkeepers were linked along the way. It appears they’re keen on a young option to add to the ranks, and now they’re looking at another young South American option.
Manchester United asking about Beltrán
Journalist Gustavo Yarroch brought the latest information on ESPN Argentina, and his information goes beyond United simply having Beltrán on a list.
He says River are currently talking to the goalkeeper about extending his contract, which runs until December 2027.
Those talks are going well. That doesn’t mean River expect him to stay for much longer, though.
Yarroch explains that the discussions already “firmly” take into account the possibility of Beltrán being sold to European football “sooner rather than later”. Also, there are two clubs asking about him right now.
“One club is Italian, the other is English. One club is Inter in Italy, the other is Manchester United,” Yarroch said.
So United now have some competition from Inter, and they aren’t the only clubs to have been around Beltrán in recent months. The important bit is that River themselves seem prepared for this to go somewhere.

New contract doesn’t necessarily mean he’s staying
Recent reports in Argentina have already suggested Beltrán could leave as soon as January.
River have been working to improve his salary, extend his contract and significantly increase his release clause. Those negotiations had previously been described as “on track”.
At first glance, that sounds like bad news for Manchester United. But the latest ESPN information gives it a different feel.
River can renew Beltrán and still sell him shortly afterwards. Yarroch specifically warns that a transfer could happen despite the goalkeeper signing a new deal.
In other words, getting the contract sorted would give River much more protection if United, Inter or anyone else come with serious money.
There’s another little detail worth watching. Yarroch says Beltrán’s agency has strong connections in Argentina and Europe, and also represents Emiliano Martínez.
So Beltrán has gone from an unexpected River breakthrough to Argentina international and European target in a matter of months.
Manchester United have already spent plenty of time looking at goalkeepers. According to ESPN Argentina, their search has now taken them directly to Beltrán – and River appear well aware they may soon have a decision to make.
